How Much Does It Cost to Rent Scaffolding in NYC?

Reviewed October 2026

ABC prices each NYC job from the building, so no flat rate exists. Three things move the number most: facade height and length, how long the scaffold stands, and the labor to install and remove it. Send an address and we quote your building, and we handle the DOB filing.

What scaffolding costs in NYC: the short answer

Two buildings that look alike can still price differently once the wall, the street and the schedule differ. A flat rowhouse front, a corner mid-rise with a cornice and a tower facade each call for different crews, materials and time, so a single sticker price would mislead you.

Equipment-only rental prices from home-improvement sites describe a different service. This page covers installed scaffolding on NYC buildings: we build it, inspect it while it stands and take it down. If you need equipment to carry away, we do not supply that.

What moves the price

Seven things set a scaffold quote. The table shows which way each one pushes the price and what we need from you to account for it.

Factor How It Moves the Price What We Need From You
Scaffold Type Frame scaffolding installs fastest on flat walls. Pipe scaffolding requires more labor to follow cornices and setbacks. Suspended scaffolding hangs from the roof and has its own pricing structure. A photo of the facade.
Height and Facade Length More stories and greater wall length require additional frames or tubing, more labor, and longer dismantling time. Number of stories and wall length.
Time on the Building Scaffolding that remains in place for months costs more to maintain, inspect, and extend than scaffolding used for a few weeks. Planned work and start date.
Permits and Engineering A supported scaffold generally needs a DOB permit when it exceeds 40 feet, while a sidewalk shed requires a permit at any height. Some designs require a registered professional engineer, and OSHA requires one for frame scaffolds over 125 feet. Building height and any open DOB violations.
Installation and Removal Labor Crew size and time on site increase with the number of scaffold bays. Narrow alleys and courtyards can add hand-carry time. Access to the wall.
Street and Site Conditions Sidewalk width, traffic, and roadway use affect how the job is staged. Work occupying the roadway may require a DOT permit, which can be identified during the site survey. Address and borough.
Add-ons Sidewalk sheds, netting, Jersey barriers, and temporary fencing add scope and may each carry a separate cost. Whether the sidewalk, lot, or roadway needs protection.

Permit and filing costs

Your budget has three layers, and only the first one is ours.

Layer Who Sets It What It Covers
Contractor Price ABC Installation, inspections while the scaffold is in place, removal, and DOB filing work.
City Fees NYC Department of Buildings Permit fees, including the stated $130 DOB charge to renew a sidewalk shed permit every 90 days.
Engineering The Design Professional Preparation of drawings when the design requires them.

A sidewalk shed needs a DOB permit at any height. A supported scaffold needs one once it passes 40 feet, and the height counts any shed beneath it. Suspended scaffolds file separately, and the work the scaffold supports can carry its own filing.

We confirm which requirements apply during the site survey and handle the applicable filings through DOB NOW: Build. For the full rules, see our guide to permit and filing costs.

What a complete quote includes

Hold any scaffold quote, ours included, against these lines. A quote that skips one leaves that cost for later.

Line What It Should Say
Installation Define the scope, including which elevations are covered and how many stories are involved.
Inspections Identify who inspects the scaffold while it is in place and how often inspections occur.
Removal Confirm that dismantling and removal are included in the quoted price.
DOB Filing Work Clarify whether the contractor handles filings, tracks their status, and manages renewals.
City Fees List municipal fees as separate line items, apart from the contractor's price.
Engineering Specify whether drawings are required and who is responsible for paying for them.
Extensions Explain how pricing changes if the work extends beyond the initial term.
Add-ons List sidewalk sheds, netting, barriers, and fencing separately, with individual prices.

Our quotes list city fees on their own line, so you can compare like for like.

Per day, per week or per month?

Installed scaffolding rarely suits a daily rate. The heavy labor sits at the two ends of a job, the build and the takedown, so a daily number hides most of the cost. We quote the job as a whole: the build, the term the scaffold stands and the removal. If a contractor quotes by the day, ask what installation and removal cost on top. Tell us your timeline and we price extensions into the quote from the start.

Emergency and violation-driven jobs

A shifted frame, falling debris or a DOB order will not wait for a survey. Our line answers around the clock. Describe the site and we tell you what the work involves and what it costs before a crew starts. Holding a violation? Send the notice and the address, and we explain the filing or site work that may follow. The DOB alone decides outcomes, so we promise none. For emergency sheds, see our sidewalk shed page.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Not as a rule. We quote the whole job: the build, the weeks or months the scaffold stands, and the takedown. Tell us your timeline and we price it into the quote.

Our quote covers the DOB filing work. The city's own fees, such as the $130 DOB charge to renew a sidewalk shed permit, are the DOB's and appear on their own line.

Often. Scaffold over a public sidewalk usually needs a shed beneath it, and we build and price the pair together. A shed also needs its own DOB permit.

Call and describe the site. We tell you what the work involves and what it costs before the crew starts. A DOB order or a shifted frame gets an answer at any hour.

Height, facade length and time on the building move the price most. Scaffold type and add-ons come next. Send the address and a photo and we price your building.

Send the address, the building's height, the work planned and your start date, with a facade photo if you have one. Call (718) 581-4370 or use the quote form.
